They had just recently returned from captivity in exile. All the people of Judea had only just gathered together again, and the temple together with its altar and equipment had been newly dedicated to God after being polluted.
And they sent into all Samaria round about, as far as Jericho, and seized upon all the tops of the mountains:
They had only recently returned home to Judah from exile and had just rededicated the Temple and its utensils and its altar after they had been defiled.
Now, they had only recently returned from exile, and all the people of Judea were just now reunited, and the vessels, the altar, and the temple had been purified from profanation.
